These cunning creatures have been paying other Elves with fake gold knots for years, and no one had a clue until now. The Mentors demand the Elves pay the five million knot deficit in ninety days, but no one has any gold left. The pressure is on, and everyone is at a loss for how to come up with the gold, until Lady Alex devises a brilliant plan. Book Excerpt

This sucked! I came home expecting a warm welcome, but instead, I’ve been chewed out twice. Or was it three times? I should have kept score, but I had no idea what I was walking into. I had returned to Eledon because my mortal boss in Paris, Étienne, a world renown fashion designer, went into the hospital for a ruptured appendix. He had delayed treatment because he had top billing during fashion week in Paris, and it consumed him. We worked extra-long hours to get the clothes done in time, and the results were brilliant. Although he could have died, he didn’t, but when he was taken to the hospital, all work in the design studio came to a screeching-ass halt although I had to finish up some photoshoots for a magazine spread. Work won’t start up again until Étienne gets back at the end of March. So, I came home to Eledon.

Eledon was the home of the Elves, and was given to us by our Mentors when we were forced to leave Earth. I was part Elf and mortal, well, mostly mortal. My father was a mortal man from a place in outer space called Oltria, and my mother was the daughter of a Water Elf and a Titan. I hardly remembered them since they died when I was four. When I grew up, I lived with my mortal foster parents until I turned sixteen. Then I moved in with my Elfin grandmother, Lady Lestin of the Water Elves. Talk about a culture shock. I’m still learning about Elves.

⭐Pump Up Your Book Virtual Book Tour Kick Off⭐The Vision of the Quest by Kimberly Cole #Fantasy

Alicia, Roger and Emily must unite against the forces of a warlord intent on destroying anyone who stands in his way.

Title: The Vision of the Quest

Author: Kimberly Cole

Pages: 326

Genre: Fantasy

Liana, a widowed mother of Alicia and Emily, is in a desperate situation. After her car breaks down on a desolate road, she feels lucky to have her daughter’s friend Roger with them. As they begin a trek to seek help, Liana has no idea that she, her daughters, and Roger are all about to embark on the adventure of their lives. After the group finally reaches the vast doors of a mansion in the middle of nowhere, they are greeted by an eerie butler, who leads them to Sir Bronze Pierce, the master of the mansion who soon captivates Liana with his charming personality. Roger and the rest of the group are slowly drawn, one-by-one, through a portal into a different time, where they are soon thrust into a battle with a wicked warlord whose ultimate goal is complete domination. It is up to Alicia, Roger, and Emily to bring back harmony and peace to these strange kingdoms. As the three young people seek the help of the king’s court — a loyal Griffin, a powerhouse rock man, and other valiant warriors– they must unite against the forces of a warlord intent on destroying anyone who stands in his way.

Praise:

“During the late hours of the night, Roger woke up abruptly. He thought he was dreaming; an evil presence drew him out of his bed and into the hallway. He walked through all kinds of twists and turns and stopped suddenly in front of a door needing a repainting…In the center was a narrow slide with a small opening. ‘Look and see! Look and see!’ the voices called him out and urged him on. Bit-by-bit, Roger looked into the slot…” So begins a suspenseful, page-turning, dark fantasy read in the spirit of work like Terry Brooks, Stephen King, Gary Dauberman, and even the author’s literary inspiration, C.S. Lewis, who shares the author’s faith.

What Kimberly Cole does not have in terms of out-and-out, one hundred percent originality, she more than makes up for in terms of overall ideological presentation, characterization, and rich, immersive worldbuilding. You really feel like you’re experiencing a fast-paced fever dream if you delve into the text. There really is this sense of total, emotive immersion in the stakes at play, likely coming from the decidedly personal origins of the work. Cole herself clearly has decided to make this her passion project. The choices feel as much informed by superb storytelling technique, as they do by Cole’s unique vision. Cole herself states the following: “(The Vision of the Quest) was a test for me to write. At times, I struggled to tell my story…pushing on always, faith pulled me through to my goal. This book is special to me because I was talking with my husband sharing how I would love to write a book like Narnia with three children…The next morning my daughter, Meghan, had awoken from her sleep. She came to me excited saying, ‘Mom, I had an awesome dream with three children and their mother stranded on a dark road. I came to a mansion and knocked on a door when a butler answered’. She said there was an evil man named Sir Bronze Pierce and then I had taken the story from there. I could not have completed this book first without God’s help and my husband’s support.”

Indeed, Sir Bronze Pierce is one of the juiciest dark fantasy villains to grace the pages of a work like this in some time. He has this kind of dramatic, old-fashioned menace that at once retains a good sense of fun, while not shying away from what the narrative needs to be. I’m a big fan of a good, scary villain to raise the stakes for our heroes and heroines, and Sir Bronze Pierce is no exception to this. Again, this kind of quality likely comes from the work being intensely personal for Cole. Core aspects of the narrative are inspired by Cole’s daughter’s dreams, which adds a poetic and innocent quality to even the darker aspects of the story, and necessarily menacing scenes. The Christian element is also intriguing. More often than not, popular genre work with Christian themes tends to lean into distinctly paranormal, if not paranormal horror stories. Seeing something appealing to a wide audience with Christian themes is compelling, and a bit different from the usual, pantheistic nature of fantasy. — Cyrus Rhodes

The Vision of the Quest is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Ewings Publishing LLC.

Melanie ran out of matches. She could no longer stand beside Liana but behind her. She realized the tunnel was growing smaller when her hand hit the wall. She felt the cold, hard rock. The young girl yelled out in absolute fear, “We’re going to die in here!” Frightened, she threw her arms around the back of Liana’s curvy waist things looked hopeless. Liana had her doubts and wondered whether they would make it out of there. She whispered in fear. “What would become of my children” ?  Her hopes were beginning to diminish.

Quantum heard in Liana’s voice disappointment. He unflinchingly said out loud, “My lady, go with the encouraging Spirit that’s deep inside your soul. I discovered the day you entered Congo’s land I sensed a power within you that I do not quite understand. I do know this unlimited power you possess can overcome any fear that tries to lay hold of your conscience. Lift it up! Believe in this strength that lives within your being. There is nothing that can stop you, not even fear itself. This is your time! Grasp it and lead us to safety.

PUYB Author Talks: ⭐A Bookish Conversation with 'AJ and the Incredible Fish' Paolo Mazzucato⭐ #AJandtheIncredibleFish #interview

Paolo Mazzucato is an American fiction author and screenwriter. He began his writing career as a Chicago playwright and award-winning student filmmaker before moving to Los Angeles where he won awards for screenwriting and scripted various projects for film and television. He is also the author of several children’s books including: “No One Mocks a Panda” (an Amazon #1 Best Seller, Feb. 2019), and “The Absolutely True Story of La Befana” (an Amazon Holiday Top 100 title). He is also the author of the fantasy/adventure novel, “The Gondoliers: The Secret Journals of Fanticulous Glim,” a “recommended” read by the US Review of Books.

Mazzucato’s new book will be launched on Sunday, September 22nd at the Orange County
Children’s Book Festival
in Costa Mesa, California.

Find out more about the author on his website:  www.writer.mazzucato.org and follow him on his social media (Facebook, X and Instagram).

Before you started writing your book, what kind of research did you do to prepare yourself to write this?

I think research for a book, especially in fiction, is a constant and continual process. Little ideas that occur to you…themes that weave themselves into your day-to-day life…moments that you file away in memory, become the springboard for characters, scenes and stories. With AJ and the Incredible Fish, the characters are definitely fused from personalities and philosophies of people I have encountered in some form throughout my life. And while AJ’s adventure is certainly fantastical, the underlying purpose of each step in the journey relates in a very real way to steps that we each take in deciding what risks we are willing to chance and what path we choose to follow. The particulars of setting, of course, will help make a story feel authentic, and for that reason, I like to blend my created world with some aspect of the real world. AJ’s home and life in Maui stems from my spending time in that setting with extended family. While certain specifics are researched, most of the description that gives life to that place comes from first-hand experience of the town and rhythms you experience there. I did do a bit of traditional research when it came to the portions of the story at sea—terms and practical knowledge—because while those scenes are windswept in fantasy, they still need to have a foot firmly in a reality that makes sense.

Did you purposefully choose a distinct month to release your book?  Why?

I had heard that, ideally, the best time for a fantasy release is the beginning of summer, when school wraps up and people on vacation are ready to spend time with a fun adventure. That idea may still be valid, but maybe summer fun, these days, is more about outdoor activities.
Curling up with a good book may be more of a Winter holiday pursuit. So, launching AJ at the end of September at the Orange County Children’s Book Festival turned out to be a good option. Hopefully, kids and parents (and grandparents) will find the journey of AJ and his Grandpa to be a charming and even exciting prospect for their Winter break.

How did you choose your cover?

The collage of images from AJ’s adventure over an old world map of the seas was an image in my head even as I was still finishing the book. I had mocked up some art with character silhouettes over a compass and map early on, and when I met with an illustrator much later, I had very detailed ideas and compositions for the cover and each of the twenty-two chapter heading graphics and twenty-two chapter illustrations. I eventually forged ahead with the art, trying to recreate the cover and images from my mock-ups and from those in my head to best capture the fun and adventure of the story.

What's your opinion on giving your book away to sell other copies of your book?

As a writer, the goal is certainly to share your work with as many people as possible; however, you should never forget or dismiss the fact that it is, in fact, work. I was once told that work that is given away has been treated the same as work with no value. Now, giving some copies as a tool for marketing is a calculated expense, but that’s what it is, an expense that will hopefully generate interest among a wider audience.
I am not a fan of giving free things to people who just don’t think they should have to pay for anything.

What are some of the most important things you believe an author should do before their book is released?

After finishing, let it sit for a while; then, reread it. If you can allow yourself sometime to “forget” the story, then you might be able to see the parts that are unclear or that just don’t work. That, of course, leads to the next “important” thing you should do which is rewrite. If a chapter or section isn’t serving the story or the characters, cut it.

Save it in a separate file if you like, but streamline the story so that is doesn’t get bogged down in tangents that you once thought were entertaining but are, on the whole, irrelevant. Then let someone else read it, preferably not someone who just loves everything you do (grazie, Mamma). A critical, fresh eye will find more parts that don’t make sense or don’t further the story. Cut or rework those parts too.
Obviously correcting type-o’s and formatting errors goes without saying.
Then, when you are sure your story is the best you can make it…read it again, start to finish, several times. I guarantee you will stumble over another awkward phrase or mind-boggling type-o that you missed. Finally, after all that, create an Advance Review Copy (ARC) to get the ball rolling with some legitimate, professional reviews.

What are some of the most important things you believe an author should do after their book is released?

Unless you, as a writer, are also an expert in marketing, it helps to find someone else to champion or promote your book. Whether that’s an agent or manager or publicist, having a professional whose expertise will put your work in front of the right eyes and help it stand out in an otherwise crowded field, will make a big difference.

What would you like to say to your readers and fans about your book?

For me, AJ and the Incredible Fish is both epic and personal. The story is a flight of fantasy that takes the reader on a grand adventure full of strange, new places and peculiar characters; but at its heart, it is a tale of personal growth and discovery. AJ’s relationship to his new friend Livvy and especially to his Grandpa is just as much a journey as is their quest to find the incredible fish. I hope that young readers will enjoy the action-filled adventure while recognizing AJ’s hopes, doubts and uncertainties in themselves as well. And I hope older readers will see in the subtext, a story that is just as relevant for those of us who must continue to reach for the “extraordinary” in life, to see the “horizon beyond the waves.”

Pump Up Your Book Virtual Book Tour Kick Off: THE PENITENT by A. Keith Carreiro @immortalitywars #fantasy

We're thrilled to kick off the virtual book tour for THE PENITENT by fantasy author A. Keith Carreiro. If you would like to follow his tour, visit Pump Up Your Book!

THE PENITENT
By A.Keith Carreiro
Fantasy

THE PENITENT—PART III Completes the First Trilogy in The Immortality Wars Series as the Battle between Good and Evil Explodes onto Urban Terrain

THE PENITENT—PART III, the third installment in author A. Keith Carreiro’s Immortality Wars series, brings Pall Warren, an elite warrior touched by the hand of God, into a new battle that pits the forces of good against those derived from the evils of man and beyond. As the final book in The Penitent trilogy, Pall joins with former enemies and comes closer to fulfilling his purpose of overcoming the corruption threatening humanity.

In THE PENITENT—PART III, Pall Warren recovers from another bout of the suffering that has plagued his life by helping his friends bury their family members who were killed by a supernatural being with an insatiable appetite for humans. He travels to Gullswater, West Fündländ, in search of John Savage—the accomplished bowman—who was once his foe. The men forged their friendship in combat against Commander Gregor Mordant and his Marauders.

While Pall searches for his friend, Savage meets with his employer, Braucus Peredurus, the King’s minister of affairs, to report his observations of mystical events and otherworldly creatures and then reveals that he has been tracking Commander Mordant, who, as he learns from Peredurus, is a key member of the King’s intelligence service network.

Mordant is loyal to Kosem Mungadai, the respected head of the Church of Equity in the City of Seascale and a practitioner of the occult arts. Savage suspects Mordant is working against the King’s agenda and wants to detain the Commander, but Peredurus orders him not to; however, this command does not stop the bowman from surveilling Mordant. Meanwhile, Pall encounters Merek, a former member of the Marauders and crossbow expert. Merek suggests that Savage has gone to Seascale in search of Mordant.

As tensions rise in the city, Mordant, Mungadai, and Savage cull together fighters to engage in urban warfare during a torrential rainstorm. As the battle begins, Pall and Merek stealthily contribute to Savage’s efforts. While the warriors relentlessly brawl throughout the pitch-black night, Mungadai conjures a squad of supernatural beings to assault Savage and his warriors with the ultimate goal of overthrowing the kingdom and empowering the evil forces he serves.

In writing THE PENITENT—PART III, Carreiro’s goal was to create an epic story that brings Pall closer to fulfilling his destiny by posing the question, “In his quest for meaning, can virtue be used to combat and overcome evil?” For the reader, Carreiro hopes THE PENITENT—PART III offers a sense of “the mystery, wonder, and grandeur that is in this world and beyond that is available to us in the time we are placed here, despite the suffering and challenges each of us faces in our own lives.”

Seascale was a beautiful place to be. The Commander reveled in being there. Built on top of a natural limestone promontory, its one hundred five–foot sloping walls were made up of the finest quality limestone. The top of the parapets was up to twenty–five feet wide, the base being half more in its width and extending another twelve levels below ground. Mordant often would spend time walking these walls, talking with the guards posted on them and looking out at the Great Bay beyond them.

He knew that the stone he walked upon was quarried from the other side of the crescent shaped bay. Ages ago, it had been brought by barge to the location where he now stood and built with great skill by the architects and masons of that ancient time. When the sun threw its light on the walls themselves, he thought it seemed to caress them as a lover touches his paramour. As a result of the sun’s fervor on the stone’s clear surface, the walls responded in a light golden yellow blush.

Keith Carreiro is the author of a planned nine-book series called The Immortality Wars. The Penitent—Part III is the third book and the last installment in the series’ first trilogy.

Carreiro is an adjunct professor at Bridgewater State University and Bristol Community College. He earned his master’s and doctoral degrees at Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Acting on his lifelong love of storytelling, Carreiro began writing The Immortality Wars series in 2014.
