Inside the Book

Title: Three Small Bones
Author: Jennifer Chase
Publisher: Bookouture
Pages: 358
Genre: Crime Thriller

Smoke curls from what’s left of the beautiful family home on the edge of the woods. The heat is unbearable as she descends the stairs to the basement, past a set of bicycles––two big, one small. That’s when she sees three little white bones in the cracked earth at her feet, turning her blood to ice…

When firefighters tackling a blazing house in a quiet suburb of Pine Valley, California discover human remains, Detective Katie Scott races to 717 Maple Street. She calls a halt to the excavations the moment she sees the full number and size of the bones; someone has buried a whole family down here.

Working night and day, it’s up to Katie to prove her theory that the fire was no accident, that someone wanted to expose the secret in the basement. Tiny traces of explosives residue found at the scene is all the proof she needs. But the Cross family have been missing for months––leaving friends and loved ones in agonizing pain––what twisted soul would do this now? And why?

The case takes another heart-shattering turn when Katie’s suspicions over recent renovation work on the house leads to the discovery of more bodies in the back yard: two little girls, buried years apart. What other devastating secrets are hidden in this perfect family home?

It’s a dead end at every turn as Katie tracks down anyone who knew the family. Just when it looks like all hope is lost, reports of the Cross’s landlord harassing the family before they went missing gives Katie a crucial lead. With a menacing grey sedan following her every move, how many more innocent lives will be lost before Katie can dig up the truth?

“Edge-of-your-seat suspense to the very end! … Clear your schedule… you will not want to put it down!” Goodreads reviewer, 5 stars

“Love, love, LOVE… I absolutely adore this series!!” Goodreads reviewer, 5 stars

“Grabbed me from the very first page! It was so intense, and enthralling. I stayed up until 11pm two nights in a row so I could finish it.” NetGalley reviewer

Perfect at Midnight (Review)

, "Chase really shows off her writing chops in some pretty tense action scenes that had me holding my breath. There were three chapters that were real nail-biters for me (chapters 25, 29, and 48 to be exact), so keep the caffeine nearby so you can keep up and not miss a single word. As for negatives, I have none to report. Everything was spot on and designed to thrill. It’s what made THREE SMALL BONES such an enjoyable albeit nerve-racking read! But don’t worry, Cisco’s got you covered! He always does. So curl up on the couch, keep your beverage of choice nearby and maybe some treats ... make that 'definitely' some treats ... and have yourself a read that you are sure to enjoy! Kudos to the author for delivering a winner!"

Community Bookstop (Review)

This book had so much going on with strong characters and intriguing storylines. It pulls you in and you
you want to know what happens in this book and keep reading until you have it all solved.  Definitely a great mystery read!

Novels Alive (Review)

"Three Small Bones provides a solid thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. As someone new to the series, I can look forward to reading the other books while waiting for Detective Scott’s next adventure to be written."

Fiction_Vixen18 @ Instagram (Review)

"I read this book as a standalone, and although I don't think I missed anything from the previous seven books in the series, it has made me want to go back and read them.
The characters within the story are really well developed and the case that is involved in the story will definitely stick with you.
I loved it!"

Booking with Janelle@Instagram (Review)

"...This book will take you for a ride, one you may not want to get off of or take another spin."

Digital Pubbing (Interview)

"It’s always my hope that readers are taken on an adventure to be taken out of the stresses of the day to enjoy a crime thriller. Three Small Bones takes the reader inside a cold case of new bodies and a twenty year old one—as the killer begins to stalk anyone related to the investigation."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fundinmental (Review)

"Three Small Bones is the third book I have read by Jennifer Chase. Ever since I read Dead Cold, an Emily Stone novel, I grab anything I see from her. Some books are five star, others not, but that won’t keep me from reading on..."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

eBook Addicts (Review)

Three Small Bones is book 8 in the Detetive Katie Scott series from Jennifer Chase. I joined this series late with book 7 Silent Little Angels, which proves that these can be read as a stand-alone as Chase provides enough backstory on the characters that you will feel you already know them from the get go.When a fire burns down a house seemingly to cover clues it instead reveals bodies in the basement and a possible link to a 25 year old cold case that Three Small Bones sees Katie and her K9 partner Cisco on the case to find out how these two case’s can possibly be connected. It was actually nice to see her fiancée Chad make an actual appearance in this book, he seemed so elusive in the last book I read I was beginning to wonder if he was really real or all in her head!"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Review Thick and Thin (Review)

"This is the eighth book in a series revolving around Detective Katie Scott and her K9 canine partner – Cisco. I love thriller or mystery books with a canine character. They add so much flavour to any story. I haven’t read any other book in the series, and can personally vouch that you can read this as a stand-alone. Chase does a fabulous job of building tension and suspense as the story progresses. The ending seemed a little disappointing, however, it didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the story. Considering this is a series, the author has put in an immense amount of effort to develop the characters. All the characters have strong background stories, and I found that impressive. If you love thrillers, cold cases keep you awake, and if you are a fan of canine sidekicks – this one is an absolute recommendation!!"

Grandma's & Grandpa's Tales Virtual Book Tour Highlights

It's so sad to see our authors go, but in tribute we do a recap of the highlights of their blog tour with us at Pump Up Your Book.  Today we're highlighting Cheryl Carpinello and her Grandma's & Grandpa's Tales Virtual Book Publicity Tour. A very big THANK YOU to all the amazing bloggers who helped make Cheryl's tour a success!

Meet the Author

Cheryl Carpinello taught high school English for 25 years. During that time, she worked with numerous students who didn’t like to read for a variety of reasons. However, she discovered that even the most reluctant readers became engaged in the classroom and in reading when she introduced units on King Arthur and the works of ancient world writers. Upon retiring, she set out to write fast-paced, action-filled stories in these setting to encourage young readers to read more. Her success with readers aged 8-16 led her to reach out to the youngest of readers and those readers just starting out. Revising stories she had written for her own children, she created Grandma/Grandpa’s Tales for ages 4-7.  Her four grandchildren’s conversations created the stories in Book 3 of this series.

Guest Post at Blogging Authors

"Each of these picture books take close to year to publish. That’s about how long it takes me to refine the text, find the images, have the artist draw those, and do the cover and the layout. After doing the covers for Books 1 & 2, my cover designer was unable to do Book 3’s cover. I reached out to another designer in England whom I had used before. She was swamped, but her artistic husband stepped up and did Book 3’s cover. He did a fantastic job, don’t you think?"

My Bookish Pleasures Interview

"Writing Grandma/Grandpa’s Tales is really an extension of my MG/Tween/YA stories. As an educator, I’m always exploring ways to get more kids reading. Reaching out to a younger audience made sense. If preschool and kindies become frustrated with learning to read, then chances are that frustration will continue as they grow. And most of the stories in the Grandma/Grandpa series had already been written."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bound 4 Escape Review

"Both of these stories are not only fun to read, but they’re simple enough for beginners to read on their own."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Mama's Corner of the World

"The stories were fun, entertaining, and gave a little bit of a discussion starting opportunities regarding decision making, neighborhoods, animals, and family.  I enjoyed the author's writing style, the colorful illustrations, and the easy flow of the stories.  I would recommend this book to families with preschoolers seeking a fun series for family storytime.  The easy-to-read, repetitive phrases make it a great early reader storybook as well."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Word Magic

"Grandma and Grandpa’s Tales Books 1-3 encourage early readers with fun stories incorporating difference aspects of nature. Book 1, Wild Creatures In My Neighborhood and What if I Went to the Circus, explores the wildlife around neighborhoods and introduces decision-making. Book 2Singers of Songs and The Not Too Stubborn Humpback, explores a common, but not so common insect, and lets readers see that being stubborn isn’t always good. Book 3Vampires in the Backyard and A Fish Tale, introduces readers to an extended metaphor and lets them decide if the fish story is real. All the books have bright, simple images to catch and keep the attention of a young reader. Where relevant, some stories have activities to help youngsters remember what they have read about or learned, or else to draw various concepts they have discovered. Parents and educators will welcome the variety of stories and the possibilities of discussions with the young audience about social issues, concepts, and choices. Very highly recommended."

Over the Rainbow Book Reviews

"In the first story, Wild Creatures in My Neighborhood had me in fits of laughter and I'm not a kid! I love this story because not many kids realize that there's a whole bunch of animals that live in the city as well as the country. This is perfect for your city rug rat so that they realize that animals are not restricted to the country.

In What If I Went to the Circus?, the illustrations in this story were so cute! So the little boy goes to the circus and starts dreaming up ways to have the circus animals for pets, only one by one they get eliminated for very good reasons! At the circus, the child looks at the animals acting behaved and downright fun. They would make perfect pets! Oh no...the little boy takes each animal he would like to have as a pet and found reasons they would be better off at the circus."

Jazzy Book Reviews

"It's a short, quick, cute read, and young readers will find it silly and fun.
4 stars!"

The Writer's Life Guest Post

"I started writing when I retired from teaching. After encountering so many high school students who didn’t like to read, I wanted to reach out to younger students in the hopes that I could share my love of reading with them. Since my high school non-readers loved Arthurian Legend (The only books I could get them to read!), I started my own Arthurian tales with Guinevere: On the Eve of Legend. I then wrote The King’s Ransom (Young Knights of the Round). After those, I moved on to my Egyptian tales (Sons of the Sphinx and Tutankhamen Speaks). However, I underestimated the appeal young Guinevere and Cedwyn, her devoted friend, would have for readers. Giving into the pressure not only from readers but from the characters themselves, I continued these two remarkable characters’ story. Guinevere: At the Dawn of Legend and Guinevere: The Legend complete the trilogy of two kids who value friendship, honor, and loyalty above all else, even their lives. Soaring to heights I never imagined, Guinevere and Cedwyn continue to draw readers into their story. Consequently, the Guinevere Trilogy outsells all my other books! I’ve even had emails from readers wanting their story to continue."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Book Connection Review

"I have enjoyed Carpinello’s work for years, and these books are no exception. As a retired teacher, she speaks to the heart of children with her stories. These tales were a lot of fun."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lisa's Reading Review

"What kind of tales would a Grandma tell her little grandchildren? She would love to read these books to her grandchild (ages 4-8) anytime of the day or at bedtime. I read Grandma’s Tales 1 and was delighted with the charming and classic style of children’s books. I would definitely want to read these books to my grandchildren. I think that they would enjoy having this book read to them over and over."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Blended Blog Review

"Both these books were so adorable.  I can't wait to share them with my own Grandson soon."

Literarily Speaking (Guest Post)

, "You've probably figured out by now reading any of the books in the Detective Katie Series is that I love dogs. Actually, I'm an animal lover and have been even before I could walk. But dogs have always been my go-to buddy. What I truly enjoy is dog training. They are amazing. I prefer active working type of dogs, like Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds, which help keep me on my toes. I have trained in obedience, agility, scent and trailing, and dock diving. One of my dogs is trained in German commands just like K9 Cisco in the book.

As the Pages Turn (Character Profile Sheet)

The worse part of my life is: I feel alone and suffer from PTSD.

I want to teach my children that: No matter what happens there are always good things and good people in your life.

A good time for me is: Late in the evening when everyone is sleeping, I sit outside on the porch swing, so I can recharge in the quiet time.

The worse advice my father gave me is: He never gave me any bad advice. He was a great father and I miss in dearly.

Don't Judge, Read (Review)

"I loved the plot, I liked the characters and I loved the mystery. The opening really pulls you into what’s going to come in this book. And it jumps from that opening into another mystery in progress, which shows you the life that our main characters are living."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All the Ups and Downs (Guest Post)

"Pine Valley, California is a fictitious town in the Sierra Mountains. This book as well as the series takes advantage of the great outdoors, mountains, lakes, and the abundance of Pine Trees. I love being outside so I incorporated it into my stories - and a few crime scenes."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hooked From the Page One (First Page Highlight)

"The front door stood ajar. It bumped gently against the jamb in rhythm with the evening breeze. The screen remained wide open and was bent precariously around the aluminum frame. Pieces of broken glass from a shattered light bulb above had scattered across the porch, leaving behind a shadowy darkness draped across the front of the small house."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sefina Hawke's Books (Review)

"PRETTY BROKEN DOLLS: DETECTIVE KATIE SCOTT SERIES #6 is a well written crime thriller that grabbed my interest right from the start. A serial killer needing to be caught and a detective need to confront her own memories in order to stop the killings was a plot that was irresistible from the start. So much so that I finished the whole book in one weekend.."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Totally Addicted to Reading Review

"The story had me on the edge of my seat from its intense prologue to the end when the case was tied up. Danger and suspense permeated the pages of this riveting read. I was on pins and needles, knowing that Katie would likely be in the killer’s crosshairs because of her K9 connection. Katie can handle herself, but it didn’t stop me from fearing for her safety."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Literary Nook (Character Interview)

You come face to face with your worse enemy. How do you react?

Being a police detective and former military K9 handler, I've come face to face with too many enemies in my short lifetime. I'm ready for anything—no matter what.

You keep a photo album of memories from your lifetime. If you could only keep one photo, which one would that be?

It would be a photo of me and my parents when I was twelve years old. It was happy times before they were brutally taken from me in an auto accident.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rajiv's Reviews (Review)

"Even though I have not read the previous five books, I had no trouble reading this as a standalone. Katie is good in the lead as she and her partner McGaven try to find a possible serial killer whose victims appear like broken dolls. The author writes crime fiction nicely, and it was interesting to see how Katie started to connect the clues. The author adds potential suspects and suspicious people like Agent Campbell, who just gave me the creeps."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Books for Books (Review)

"I really enjoyed reading PRETTY BROKEN DOLLS: DETECTIVE KATIE SCOTT SERIES #6. The book had a nice pace to it that let me take in the different hints and clues while still following Katie on her hunt for the truth. I enjoyed following Katie and trying to figure out the mystery alongside her."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

amandainpa (Review)

"The story was full of suspense and action, along with several twists and turns. It moved super fast and was difficult to put down. I highly recommend this one! I’m looking forward to going back in the series and reading more from this author."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the Page Turns (Interview)

What kind of advice would you give other crime fiction authors?

"There's so much advice out there, but I believe in the basics. Write. Write. And Write. Write what you love and don't let anyone tell you what they think you should write. Happy writing."

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jazzy Book Reviews (Guest Post)

"Pretty Broken Dolls revolves around Detective Katie Scott who heads up the cold case unit in Pine Valley, California. I'm fascinated with cold cases as well as the people who investigate them. Even though it's sad that these cases have remained unsolved for a couple of years and sometimes decades, I find that the men and women who persevere with the dedication to solve them to give closure to the families are true heroes."

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blogging Authors (Guest Post)

"I don’t know how many times I’ve read a novel where the author doesn’t understand the difference between a revolver and semi-automatic gun. If you’re going to use a gun as the character’s weapon of choice, know everything about it—size, make, model, type of grip, how many bullets it holds, how to hold, and how the safety works."

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Booking with Janelle (Review)

"Chase does it again with another suspenseful Detective Kate book! I love that the characters Chase creates are flawed and relatable, but also that almost all have some hidden depth to them."

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Faerie Review (Review)

"I was so happy to see Katie and McGavin back for another thrilling mystery. The rapport between them is natural, and only enhances the story. This one gave me chills the moment I started reading, as the prologue unfolded like a horror movie. There was never a dull moment, and I was reluctant to take any breaks from reading. You’ll be trying to figure out who the killer is, what his next move is, and just what is going on with Special Agent Campbell? Perfect for mystery and thriller lovers."

 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just Another Reader (Review)

"This is the second Chase book that I'm reading, and I was eagerly looking forward to reading this episode of Detective Katie's chronicles as she and Sean fervently try stopping a serial killer on the loose, with the lives of potential innocent victims at stake. The book holds up pretty well as an edge-of-the-seat, stand-alone tale. The narrative is brilliant, and had me guessing and wondering on the identity of the criminal until the revelation. As in the previous one, I loved Katie's characterization with all its vulnerabilities, as she struggles through PTSD and insecurities. A lovely read which I was glad to not miss."
