Before you started writing your book, what kind of research did you do to prepare yourself to write it?
Before I delved into writing 'Urbex Predator,' I drew inspiration from my own experiences as an urban explorer. You see, I've spent countless hours exploring abandoned places, snapping photos, and enjoying the thrill of adventure. Along the way, I've encountered my fair share of vandals, though they've never posed a serious threat. But then I started to wonder, what if they were more than just troublemakers? What if they were something far more sinister? This sparked my imagination and led me to create a story where two teams of Urbexers find themselves facing off against a dangerous gang in an abandoned Cold War-era barracks. It's a tale filled with suspense, action, and a touch of the unknown. So, if you're ready for a wild ride, come join me in exploring the darker side of urban exploration!
Did you pursue publishers or did you opt to self-pub?
Well, in today's publishing landscape, breaking into the traditional publishing world can be quite the challenge, especially for new authors like myself. Publishers often prefer established authors with a large following and a track record of bestsellers. As someone who's just starting out, I found that self-publishing was the best route for me. It gives me the freedom to bring my book directly to readers without the gatekeepers of traditional publishing. However, self-publishing also comes with its own set of challenges. Not only do I get to be the writer, but I also wear the hats of promoter, marketer, and social media guru. It's a whole new world, but one that I'm excited to navigate as I continue on this writing journey.
If self-published, did you hire someone to format the ebook version for you or did you do it yourself? Can you tell us what that was like?
Despite my background as a designer, formatting an ebook turned out to be a different beast altogether. While I'm passionate about creating beautiful soft and hardcover books, ebooks require a different skill set. It's more of a programming job, as ebooks are technically akin to websites rather than traditional print books. So, for Urbex Predator, I decided to enlist the help of another designer who specialized in ebook formatting. It was a wise investment that allowed me to ensure a smooth reading experience for my readers. Now that I have experience under my belt, I feel confident that I can tackle ebook formatting for future projects on my own. Consider it a one-time investment in my self-publishing journey.
If self-published, how did you determine the price?
I determined the price mainly by conducting a thorough analysis of the competition and calculating what would be a fair price point for both readers and myself. It's essential to strike a balance between being competitive in the market and ensuring that the value of the book is appropriately reflected in its price.
Did you purposefully choose a distinct month to release your book? Why?
No, I didn't choose a specific month intentionally. Initially, I aimed for a release before Christmas, but as the deadline approached, I realized it was too rushed. So, I decided to push the release to February for a more strategic approach.
How did you choose your cover?
I'm fortunate to have a background in design, which proved invaluable when it came to creating the cover for Urbex Predator. Drawing from my own experiences as an urban explorer and photographer, I selected a haunting image I captured during one of my explorations. With the help of Photoshop, I transformed it into a chilling night scene that perfectly captured the essence of the book. Additionally, I included some of my other photographs throughout the book to add an authentic touch. Did you write your book, then revise or revise as you went?
I adopted a flexible approach to writing and revising my book. While writing, I often revisited and revised chapters as I progressed, ensuring they aligned with my vision. Additionally, I shared my work with friends along the way to gather feedback and ensure I was heading in the right direction. It's easy to get lost in your own story, so external perspectives are invaluable. Once the book was complete, I had it professionally revised to gain a neutral opinion and ensure its quality.
Did you come up with special swag for your book and how are you using it to help get the word out about your book?
The book theme has garnered significant attention within the Urbex community, providing a natural platform to promote my book. I've utilized various strategies to spread the word, including newsletter and website promotions, price promotions, and virtual book tours. While I haven't created special swag for the book, the Urbex theme itself has proven to be a powerful promotional tool.
What’s your opinion on giving your book away to sell other copies of your book?
Ah, the age-old question of giving away free copies to boost sales. It's a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest. I've experimented with this approach, and while it can generate some buzz, the results vary. It really depends on who you're giving the book to and what they're willing to offer in return. I've found that simply sending out free copies doesn't always translate into increased sales. Sometimes, you'll get a nice social media post with some promotional copy, but it doesn't necessarily lead to clicks or purchases.
For me, it's all about finding the right balance. I look for opportunities where the recipient genuinely wants to read the book and has an audience that aligns with my target readers. In those cases, I'm more inclined to provide a free copy. But I always make sure to clarify expectations upfront and ensure that it's a mutually beneficial arrangement.
One thing I steer clear of is paying for reviews on blogs. That just feels like throwing money down the drain, especially if you're not a well-known author. I'd much rather focus on building genuine connections and letting the quality of my work speak for itself.
What are some of the most important things you believe an author should do before their book is released?
If I had to narrow it down to just three essential tasks before a book launch, I'd prioritize revision and test reading, creating momentum through advanced reader copies and reviews, and planning a strategic launch day with a strong presence on outlet plattforms and as many sales as possible. While there are countless other things you could do to prepare, these would be my top priorities for ensuring a successful launch.
What are some of the most important things you believe an author should do after their book is released?
After the initial book launch, it's important to keep the momentum going. Plan for the next book while continuing to garner reviews and maintain sales. Look for opportunities to generate positive attention, whether it's through networking with other writers, pursuing awards, or releasing an audiobook version. The key is to stay creative and proactive in keeping your book in the spotlight.
What kind of pre-promotion did you do before the book came out?
Before the book was released, I engaged in extensive pre-promotion efforts. This included networking within the Urbex community, participating in podcast interviews, and leveraging social media platforms alongside other influencers. Additionally, I utilized platforms like Goodreads, Booksproud, and NetGalley to secure advanced reviews.
Do you have a long term plan with your book?
I envision my book having a long-term presence in the market, with steady sales and continued reader engagement over time. However, I'm also open to adapting to reader feedback and demands. If there's interest in an audiobook version or a sequel, I'm more than willing to explore those possibilities. Currently, two months after its release, I'm pleased with the direction the book is heading, considering its sales and reviews. Nonetheless, I'm always generating new ideas and considering future projects, and I'll make decisions about those in the coming weeks.
What would you like to say to your readers and fans about your book?
I remember the moment the idea for Urbex Predator struck me vividly, as if it were yesterday. During one of our urban exploration adventures, we found ourselves in an abandoned hospital when a group of thugs stormed in, mirroring a scene straight out of the book where Nela and Tess encounter the approaching gang. Fortunately, we managed to escape the hospital unscathed that day, but we later heard harrowing tales of fellow Urbexers falling victim to similar encounters and getting robbed.
During our vacation, as I sat on the patio, I began jotting down notes, crafting character names, and envisioning the desolate barracks that would serve as the backdrop for the story. And now, two years later, here we are with the book available in both German and English. It's been an incredible journey, filled with remarkable people and unforgettable moments.
